Overview of canyoning in Mallorca

Canyoning in the Serra de Tramuntana

One of the main features of the Serra de Tramuntana, is its dominating Karst morphology, where during the years, realy deep, narrow and truly spectacular canyons have been formed due to the action of the water (with chemical and mechanical erosion). Some of these torrents (as ravines and canyons are known in Mallorca) are classified as some of the most steepest, narrowest and most beautiful in Europe. In some them, you also have the singularity that you can complete it, directly to the Mediterranean Sea.

Torrent del Gorg Blau - Sa Fosca Tour (Natural Monument)

Canyoning in Escorca. Hard level

The canyon

The descent into the Gorg Blau karst canyon is considered by many canyoners as the most beautiful in Europe. This is not surprising, since throughout its winding route, the narrowness and sustained verticality of its walls that exceed 200m in height and that even form a really long dark sector (Sa Fosca), imposes respect even to the bravest sportman. The Gorg Blau torrent is characterized by being a canyon of high difficulty, as it is very aquatic and long, two characteristics that as the descent progresses, makes strength and body heat decrease.

The approach

Walking along the road and trek down to the head around 30min. The canyon, from the very beginning, the old Turixant electric power station, is encased and continues its course forming a really thin and deep cut in the relief of the mountain until it reaches s’Entreforc, a point where its waters continue through the Torrent de Pareis to the sea and the return uphill on foot lasts about 2 hours for us.

The Gorg Blau torrent is like a symphony to beautiful nature, where the pentagram is vertical and the notes are written in water. (EC)
