Bird watching in Mallorca

With an area of approximately 1000 km2 and a very rugged terrain next to the sea, the Serra de Tramuntana contains a peculiar geomorphological characteristic, which affects the development of an unusual and diverse nesting population of birds of prey. For nature lovers and specially those of birds, the Serra Central de Tramuntana becomes a kind of see point, where the observation of the majestic Mallorcan birds of prey becomes a pleasure.

The black vulture (Aegypius monachus) is the representative bird of the mountains; the Mallorcan colony is the last in the world and, in addition, it is the largest bird, with the longest wing span in Europe (up to 3m). In the different ZEPA areas (NATURA 2000) of the municipality of Sóller and its bordering areas, you can see the griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus), the Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus), the Bonelli’s eagle (Aquila fasciata), the osprey (Pandion haliaetus ), the booted eagle (Hieraetus pennatus), the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), the kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), the Eleonor’s falcon (Falco eleonorae) and the red kite (Milvus milvus). Not forgetting seabirds such as the Mediterranean Audouin’s gull (Larus audouinii), the shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) or pelagic species such as the endemic Balearic shearwater (Puffinus mauretanicus) or the gray shearwater (Calonectris diomedea). And also an important community of small and medium species of birds, which can be seen throughout the year (sedentary). But also those who nest in the mountains and return to their winter quarters on the African continent. Or those who finally winter on the island far from their native north or center of Europe, where they return every spring.

Undoubtedly, a beautiful natural area of the island where the birdlife of the Balearic Islands, gathers its most brave representatives here.
