The black vulture (Aegypius monachus) is the symbolic bird of these mountains: the Majorcan black vultures make up the last island colony in the world and, in addition, it is the largest bird, with the longest wingspan in Europe (up to 3m). In the different ZEPA areas (European Natura 2000 Network) of the Sóller municipality and its bordering areas, you can see the griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus), the egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus), the bonelli’s eagle (Aquila fasciata), the osprey (Pandion haliaetus ), the booted eagle (Hieraetus pennatus), the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), the kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), the Eleonora’s falcon (Falco eleonorae) and the red kite (Milvus milvus).

Not forgetting seabirds such as the Mediterranean Audouin’s gull (Larus audouinii), the shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) or pelagic species such as the endemic Balearic shearwater (Puffinus mauretanicus) or the cory’s shearwater (Calonectris diomedea). And also an important community of small and medium species of birds, which can be seen throughout the year (sedentary). But also those who nest in the Mallorca mountains and return to their winter quarters on the African continent. Or those who finally spend the winter on the island far from their native north or center of Europe, where they return every spring.
